Switch to LED Christmas lights and save money this Christmas

Before hanging your Christmas lights this holiday season, there are a few key points you should keep in mind. With so many lights available at this time of year, it’s important to weigh your options and determine which kind of lighting is best. We evaluate LEDs and incandescent lighting to see how much money you can save with LEDs.

Numerous homes in the UK will need to alter their lifestyles and make financial sacrifices in an effort to reduce their energy costs this year, especially in light of the cost-of-living problem. You might be asking, “Can I afford to have Christmas lights this year?” as many “non-essentials” have to be put on hold.

But do not worry! You may still take advantage of the wonder of the holiday season while keeping costs down thanks to the vast selection of cheaper, more energy-efficient Christmas lights that are currently on the market.

Incandescent Christmas Lights vs LEDs

Instead of using filaments to produce light, LED Christmas lights use light-emitting diodes. Therefore, LED lights outperform fluorescent incandescent lights in terms of efficiency, durability, and longevity. They are safer because they don’t burn out like regular bulbs and don’t get hot to the touch, which is especially important when you’re wrapping them around your Christmas tree. The last thing you need is your tree going up in flames!

Nothing is more disappointing than carefully attaching lights after lights to your home or tree in anticipation of a beautiful display of light and colour, only to plug it in and be disappointed with the dim illumination. LED is a clear winner in terms of colour payoff. Incandescent lights appear multicoloured due to the tinted glass covering the bulb, whereas LED lights actually emit a variety of colours. When all is said and done, this gives your tree or house a far magical and true colour payoff.

Additionally, incandescent lights are quite inefficient and consume a lot of energy. Only around one-fifth of the energy they expend is converted into visible light. The vast majority (about 90%) of the energy is lost as heat. All of this wasted energy is your money going down that drain.

However, LEDs are a very different story. They use up to 75% less energy and have a 25-fold longer lifespan. They also don’t require a lot of maintenance. LED lights don’t burn out; instead, they just get dimmer with time, so you don’t have to bother about changing them or their fuses.

How much can you save?

By converting to LED bulbs, you may save your Christmas lighting costs by up to 90%! They consume less energy, generate very little heat, have no breakable glass, and can last up to 50,000 hours.

Simple Christmas LED lights outside of your home can be operated for less money than you might expect. Prices range from 8p to £2.32 depending on how long you want your lights on for. The costs are for a basic light display outside your home that runs for 6 hours each night and uses an average of 590 bulbs:

December as a whole = £2.32.

Two weeks over the Christmas holidays = £1.05.

Christmas Day alone = 8 pence.

These prices are according to Festive Lights experiment. The wattage was 96.2w, while the average price for a KW of power was 13p.
