Thermostat Efficiency Tips for Fall

Firstly, it’s important to note that everyone’s thermostat will be different. Ensure you understand how your thermostat works and take time to read the instruction guide. This could be the difference between a huge energy bill and a manageable one.

In other words, know how to use the controls on your thermostat.

Tip 1: Install your thermostat in the right location

In order to get a correct thermostat reading, you have to ensure it is in the right place. Essentially this means just installing it in an area that won’t alter the reading. Anywhere near direct sunlight, or a drafty area such as near doors or vents. Also, anywhere near appliances as they emit heat which will alter your reading.

Ideally, you want to install your thermostat in a hallway or a room in the middle of the house. Doing this will give you the most exact temperature reading which will allow you to control your thermostat accordingly.

Tip 2: Don’t turn your thermostat completely off

Surprisingly, turning your thermostat off when you don’t need it won’t actually save you any money on your energy bills. Imagine the energy needed to heat your home from nothing, it is a lot. So doing this every day, for example when you’re not in your house, only makes your heating system work an awful lot harder. Instead, try managing the temperature on your thermostat by learning how to schedule different temperatures according to your daily routine.

In wintertime, you should look at an average temperate of 18-21 degrees as recommended by the World Health Organisation. Of course, still remain conscience of climate change whilst keeping the temperature at a comfortable level.

To clarify, setting your thermostat to a lower temperature whilst you are out of the house and especially whilst you sleeping can save you huge amounts on your energy bills. Making these changes during a time in the day you wouldn’t even realise means you don’t have to sacrifice your comfort to save energy.

Most, if not all, smart thermostats these days will allow you to control the temperature throughout different times of the day without having the do it manually each time.

Tip 3: Turn it down when you have guests over

Believe it or not, you can actually get away with turning your thermostat down when you have guests over, rather than turning it up. Human bodies are like portable heaters, so you definitely don’t need your heating on full blast whilst guests are round.

If anything, this is actually a really great opportunity to save on your energy bills. Although we’re not saying turn it off completely, don’t do that. You can for sure turn it down by a couple of degrees, the more people in the house, the warmer it’ll be.
