5 Recycling Tips & Tricks for Global Recycling Day

Global Recycling Day was created in 2018 to help recognise, and celebrate, the importance recycling plays in preserving our precious primary resources and securing the future of our planet. It is a Day for the world to come together, and put the planet first.

Did you know the average UK household creates over a tonne of waste each year? That’s about the weight of a small car! As specialist providers of renewable energy, we here at Griff believe in the power of recycling. So much so that we’re offering you our top recycling tips for ways to cut waste and help protect the planet.

  1. Know What You Can and Can’t Recycle

For many households, recycling is the simplest way they feel they can help to save the environment. However it’s not as straightforward as it may seem and actually research has shown that two thirds of all UK households are not sure which bin to use for specific items and over two thirds of brits are putting things in those bins that can’t actually be recycled! Check out what you can and can’t recycle here.

  1. Learn About Lightbulbs

LED Lightbulbs are great for the planet for a number of different reasons. Not only do they last longer than traditional lightbulbs, and help you save money on your energy bills, they’re also completely recyclable. Other ‘incandescent’ bulbs aren’t recyclable and should be thrown away in your rubbish bin

  1. Put Down that Pizza Box

Nobody would blame you for thinking you could recycle a simple cardboard pizza box, but you might be surprised to find out that the grease on these containers can’t actually be removed. This causes defects in new products made from recycled cardboard, making them unusable.

  1. Leave the Lid On

Did you know you can leave the metal lids on glass jars, or the caps on the tops of bottles, when you are recycling them? Glass processors can actually separate these two recyclable materials with ease. Many people think they’re doing the right thing by throwing bottle tops and lids away with general waste, but this often results in perfectly recyclable items ending up in landfills.

  1. Keep the Chemicals Away

Be mindful when going to recycle items like paint tins or engine oil cans as these items may appear recyclable but should actually be thrown away with general waste. This is because the residual chemicals in them (even when rinsed) can damage the machinery at your local recycling centre.
